Portland nears record 70 homicides in one year

Portland neared a grim record with the 69th homicide of the year late Friday — just one short of the record 70 killings in all of 1987.

Another person was also wounded in a separate shooting early Saturday.

The names of the victims were not immediately released, no one has been arrested, and no suspect information is available, either.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, the investigation into the fatal shooting began at 11:14 p.m. on Oct. 8. North Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting near North Fessenden Street and North Newman Avenue. When officers arrived, they located an adult male deceased. The shooting was near McCoy Park.

Homicide detectives responded to conduct the investigation. Newman was closed between Fessenden and North Newark Street, and North Fiske Avenue was closed between Fessenden Street and Newark for several hours.
